The council is responsible for the licensing of a wide range of activities and premises.
The Licensing Team grant licences to ensure public confidence and safety and to minimise crime and disorder, nuisance and other disturbance to residents, visitors and businesses from licensable activities.
The Licensing Team is available at following times throughout the week:
- Monday 9am–5pm
- Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 2–5pm
- Friday 9am–4.30pm

Public Notice – Proposed Variation to the Table of Fares
This notice details the proposed variation to the fares that can be charged by Hackney Carriages. The consultation on this proposal began on 25 February 2022 and will run for 14 days.

Online applications
Many of our licences are available through the EU Services Directive.
This has been brought in to make it easier for service providers to offer their services to customers in all EU countries.
However some licences, including taxi and gambling licences, are not covered by this initiative.

Important information
National Register of Taxi Licence Refusals and Revocations (NR3)
The licensing authority provides information to the National Register of Taxi Licence Refusals and Revocations (NR3), a mechanism for licensing authorities to share details of individuals who have had a hackney carriage or Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) licence revoked, or an application for one refused. This is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority vested in the licensing authority – that is, assessing whether an individual is a fit and proper person to hold a hackney carriage or PHV licence
Therefore:
- Where a hackney carriage/ PHV licence is revoked, or an application for one refused, the authority will automatically record this decision on NR3.
- All applications for a new licence or licence renewal will automatically be checked on NR3. If a search of NR3 indicates a match with an applicant, the authority will seek further information about the entry on the register from the authority which recorded it. Any information received as a result of an NR3 search will only be used in respect of the specific license application and will not be retained beyond the determination of that application.

Tax conditionality check
From 4 April 2022 the renewal of a taxi driver licence, private hire driver licence, private hire operator licence, scrap metal site licence and a scrap metal collector licence will only be given if the person, company or any type of partnership applying for the licence can show they have completed a tax check with the HMRC.
If a tax check has not been completed, the Licensing Authority will be unable to consider your application to renew your licence and your current licence will expire. Further guidance can be found on the GOV.UK website.
